The first thing I noticed is that this is a BIG TIME schedule. UConn, UL, UNC, IU are the highlights but throw in the SEC schedule and a tough Long Beach State squad and you can say goodbye to the RPI problems of the last few year.
I like how Cal is not backing down from challenges. There may still be a game that I am not aware of and I know he was looking a another big time opponent like a Texas or Duke. I doubt any extra game would be THAT big, but we have learned to never underestimate Calipari. The man aims high, and I love it.
Calipari spent the weekend in Orlando (and he didn't call me - ugh) with Andy Katz and he spoke to him about the schedule:
What we tried to do is eliminate any teams that were 250 and above in the power rating,'' Calipari said. "Last year they had a bunch. My teams try not to play any of them. We try not to play any in that box (on the selection committee's cheat sheet that breaks down the schedule in 50-team power-rating groupings). At this point, and you don't know what will happen with injuries, none of the teams on our schedule projected to be in that range."
Once again, it's amazing the transformation this program has taken in only four months. Staying true to his word, UK bought out a guaranteed game with Coppin State and replaced it with Long Beach State, one of the favorites in the Big West. Imagine what the man can due with a full year or two to make the schedule.
