Kentucky vs Tennessee: A look at common opponents

At this point, we all know how big this game is for Rich Brooks and his Kentucky Wildcats. A win versus the hated Vols would propel UK into second place in the SEC East and would more than likely give them a New Years Eve or later bowl. The other thing stirring the Wildcats is the pride issue as the Vols have won 24 games in a row in the rivalry. I am sure the recent comments by Lane Kiffin about a "special edition 25th anniversary uniform" for the Vols did not sit well with the Wildcats and will only add fuel to the fire.

Regardless, this is the biggest game for UK and the matchups have been (and will be) picked apart every possible way between now and Saturday so let's add to the ever growing list of Vol/Cats comparisons and look at the common opponents and how the teams fared against them.

FLORIDA 23 TENNESSEE 13
FLORIDA 41 KENTUCKY 7

AUBURN 26 TENNESSEE 22
KENTUCKY 21 AUBURN 14

ALABAMA 12 TENNESSEE 10

ALABAMA 38 KENTUCKY 20

TENNESSEE 31 SOUTH CAROLINA 13
SOUTH CAROLINA 28 KENTUCKY 26

TENNESSEE 45 GEORGIA 19
KENTUCKY 34 GEORGIA 27

TENNESSEE 31 VANDERBILT 16
KENTUCKY 24 VANDERBILT 13

There you have it. At first glance, it looks like Tennessee has the advantage, outscoring the common opponents by an average of 25.3 - 18.2. On the other hand, thanks to the blowout losses to Florida and Georgia, the Cats were outscored by an average of 26.8 - 21.9. But in the only stat that really matters, both teams are 3-3 in the critical win/loss column.

You can argue that due to UK being 3-1 in close games (11 points) and UT 0-3 in those game, UK has the edge. However you can also argue that Tennessee is only 16 points from being undefeated in the SEC. Spin it any way that you want it, but it's going to be a hell of a game on Saturday.

It was Alabama 38 & UK 20.
I think you show UK had 10 points.

Another thing to think about is that UT has gotten a little worse as the year has gone on with their D. Especially in the 2nd half. The reason, I think, is depth. look at what they have lost on the line backer side of things. At least 3 and maybe 4 are out. They lost their top two middle line backers. However, getting Janzen Jackson back this Saturday at safety will help a lot. The kid is a good player regardless of any character concerns.

Well, it looks like the Vols will have one of their LB's back. That will make things a tad more difficult.
