Kentucky moves up in both men's, women's polls; Cousins wins yet another SEC award

by Alan Smith

After easily handling both of their opponents this week in Ole Miss and LSU, UK presumably moved up one spot in both polls, to No. 2 In the ESPN/USA Today Poll and the No. 3 spot in the AP Top 25 Poll. Villanova's loss to Georgetown on Saturday helped teams like Kentucky and Syracuse move up on the polls. Kansas still remains the top team in college basketball, although they face a ranked but struggling Texas team tonight that has spiraled its way down form the top of the polls just a mere two weeks ago.

In the SEC, Tennessee has moved up to the No. 12 spot in both polls after taking Florida and LSU down to the wire, and dismantling South Carolina. Vanderbilt has remained towards the bottom with their No. 22/24 ranking. Ole Miss has managed to find their way out and join rival Mississippi State as the only other teams that have managed to drop out of the rankings the last few weeks, in effect hurting the power rankings for the conference.

One thing not mentioned enough on here is the UK Hoops (Women's) team. They have mirrored the men's team in many ways this year with their success so far, and at the same time they have surprised some people. They are ranked No. 17 in this week's AP Top 25 Poll with a 20-3 overall record. They have a big game against the Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Thursday at Memorial Coliseum, who are ranked No. 19 this week. Although I do not go to women's games, I still support them because a family member of mine has signed to play for them and is apart of the stellar class next year. I hope that they can get some of the respect and support they need.

Speaking of respect, Demarcus Cousins is starting to gain more on the national level. An example of that is his latest SEC award for his trophy case. He has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, his third such award this year and fourth overall. Over the past two weeks he has averaged 18.5 ppg and 13.5 rpg. He has recorded six straight double-doubles and has had 14 so far this season.
